Exercise Prescription & Programming

Amputees
Isaiah Lee

Hello all,

I'd like to ask about ExRx and nutrition guidelines for ABA, TKA and BKA populations. They are quite different from each other in the type of exercise programming that they need and there are limited resources for EP's to use with this population.

I want to ask if anyone else is working with the amputee population, and if so, where are you pulling your resources from?

I also want to ask if there are any educational opportunities that any of you know of that will help with this type of work? A lot of what I find is only available to Physical Therapists.

Thanks everyone!

Dawn Baker

Hi Isaiah,

I believe I saw in a prior post that you work at the VA. Try the Wounded Warriors Project, maybe someone can help you there, or guide you to a resource. I am including a few links as well,

the Abilities Expo has a list of resources,https://www.abilities.com/community/resources.html

the Amputee Coalition https://www.amputee-coalition.org/

and I have personally taken courses with Medfit (such as Adaptive Fitness, and Joint Replacements), https://www.medfitclassroom.org/.Devon Palermo wrote the Adaptive Fitness course, you could reach out to him as well, and his website is https://www.dpiadaptivefitness.co/our-services.html

If you don't already know about this site,https://www.hprc-online.org/ there is a lot of information on there in fitness and nutrition supportive information, I use this as a resource as well.

I also used Web Exercises in the past, which I saw you noted, and they are great. However, when it comes to special populations, it's always worth expanding your base. I would talk to any physicians you can within the VA(you probably have already). Also, from a nutrition standpoint, let the doctors provide them with an appointment with a registered dietician. I know you are seeking basic nutrition guidelines, but to be safe, I would refer out. They usually offer these services to Veterans. My husband is one.

I hope this helps! It can be hard to find people who share information sometimes and are reputable.

Dawn,

Thank you so much! I will start working my way through these and see what I can use. I do have a Dietician on the team, but we would be learning together the needs of this population.

I appreciate your time here. This should help a lot.
