BRIEF SUMMARY
During this webinar we will discuss recent data supporting the importance of a maximal exercise stress test for patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation. In addition, recent data on current practices and perspectives relative to exercise prescription methods and the utility of maximal exercise tests among cardiac rehabilitation programs in the United States will be presented.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Understand the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and outcomes in patients with heart disease.
2. Understand that change in cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with outcomes in patients with heart disease.
3. Understand the role of maximal exercise testing for the development of an individualized exercise training target heart rate.
4. Understand the various exercise prescription practices and perspectives towards maximal exercise testing in cardiac rehabilitation programs in the United States.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Brawner is a clinical exercise physiologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he is senior staff within the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. Over the past 25+ years he has worked in cardiac rehabilitation, non-invasive & invasive exercise testing, and clinical research. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Ball State University, a master’s degree in exercise science from Oakland University, and a doctoral degree in public health and epidemiology from Walden University. He is a past president of the Clinical Exercise Physiology Association. Dr. Brawner has served as an author or coauthor on over 100 PubMed-indexed manuscripts and nearly 150 professional abstract presentations. He has also contributed to several text books, including the 10th & 11th editions of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. His research focuses on exercise testing & training among patients with heart disease, fitness and outcomes, cardiopulmonary exercise testing in clinical trials, and cardiac rehabilitation program outcomes.
