Diet Modifications and Long-Term Cardiovascular Outcomes

Benjamin Swanson, MD; Henry Ford Health, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
BRIEF SUMMARY
During this webinar we will discuss (1) clinicians’ approach to understanding what constitutes a heart-healthy diet and how to discuss this with patients; (2) the evidence with regard to specific types of diets, specific types of food groups, fad diets; and (3) attempt to put this all into a historical context. Finally, we will review current ACC/AHA guidelines with regard to diet in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand some historical context of dietary medicine.
Understand some of the complexities of talking dietary research.
Learn some common diets recommended by cardiologists.
Learn general health properties of different food groups.
Review the current guidelineswith regard to diet in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Dr. Benjamin Swanson is originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan where he attended the University of Michigan for his undergraduate education and received a degree in biochemistry. He completed his medical education at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and completed an Internal Medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He continued his graduate medical education at Henry Ford Hospital through a Cardiology fellowship. During his general cardiology fellowship Dr. Swanson spent extra time focusing on interpretation of echocardiography and had a passion for aiding in medical education of medical students, residents and junior fellows. Upon graduating fellowship Dr. Swanson stayed with Henry Ford Health System where he is a Senior Staff Physician. His area of clinical interest include echocardiography and preventive cardiology.
