PRESENTER: Brian Coyne, MEd, ACSM-CEP, FCEPA & Shel Levine, MS, ACSM-CEP, FCEPA
BRIEF SUMMARY
During this webinar the presenters will review the cardiac cycle and its components, heart rate calculation, and axis deviation. Normal sinus rhythm and conduction disturbances (atrioventricular and bundle branch blocks) will be discussed. Atrial and ventricular arrhythmias will also be detailed before a brief discussion of ST segments. The ST segment discussion will lead into the a future webinar, Advanced ECG Interpretation. The current webinar will focus on using rhythm strips instead of 12 lead ECGs..
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Determine the cardiac cycle components and what they each represent in the cardiac cycle.
- Define what constitutes normal sinus rhythm versus an atrioventricular or bundle branch block.
- Ability to differentiate between supraventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation.
- Ability to differentiate between supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Brian Coyne is an Associate in Research at Duke University in the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute. His research interests center around acute and chronic exercise responses in healthy and clinical populations. Brian helps oversee the MoTrPAC CPET dataset and works with William Kraus’, MD, FACSM, FAHA exercise-based research team. He has expertise in both clinical and health and fitness assessment and testing, and training and educating diverse populations.

Shel Levine has been an Associate Professor of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Eastern Michigan University since 1999. His primary teaching responsibilities include EKG, Exercise Prescription, Physiology and Pharmacology. He has been very active in ACSM and CEPA serving on several committee’s and serving as President of CEPA 2018-2019. Prior to his academic career, Shel worked clinically for the Medical College of Ohio (now the University of Toledo Medical Center) and Botsford General Hospital (now part of the Corewell Health System).
